Abstract

Unconsolidated formations often encounter sand production issues that can lead to damage to production facilities, reduced operational efficiency, and increased costs. The sand consolidation method is one of the preventive approaches used to strengthen formation by injecting a specialized fluid that requires a specific shut-in period to ensure optimal curing. This study aims to determine the optimal shut-in time to maximize curing strength and regained permeability. The results indicate that the regained permeability value after the application of sand consolidation reached 79%, meeting the quality standard based on the average client requirement of 60–80%. Additionally, the curing time and crush test results showed that the most ideal shut-in period is 11 days, during which the core achieves optimal strength with the capability to withstand reservoir pressure of 1,227 psi. Beyond 11 days, the increase in strength becomes insignificant, making the 11-day shut-in period the best compromise for maintaining technical efficiency without incurring additional production cost. This research is expected to provide significant contributions for operators in determining the optimal shut-in time for implementing sand consolidation, particularly in unconsolidated formations such as Well BYP-5.
